Happy Groundhog Day! Will We See Spring or Six More Weeks of Winter?

Happy Groundhog Day! Will We See Spring or Six More Weeks of Winter?

Hey there, friends! It’s Groundhog Day, and the big question is: Will the groundhog see its shadow, or are we in for an early spring?

Every year on February 2nd, people across the U.S. (and even Canada!) turn their attention to a small, furry weather forecaster — Punxsutawney Phil. If Phil sees his shadow, legend says we’ll have six more weeks of winter. If not, get ready to break out the sunglasses because spring is coming early!

Where Did Groundhog Day Come From?

Believe it or not, this tradition dates back more than 100 years and has roots in an old European festival called Candlemas Day. People believed that if the weather was clear on Candlemas, winter would last longer. When German settlers came to Pennsylvania, they added a new twist: a groundhog as the official weather predictor!

How Accurate Is Phil?

Well… let’s just say Phil is a little hit or miss. He’s been predicting the weather for more than a century, but meteorologists say he’s only right about 40% of the time. (Maybe he should get a weather app?)
